Our Story

In the rich tapestry of our family history, the threads of entrepreneurship, cultural appreciation, and resilience are intricately woven. Established in 1923 by A.M. Rana and Sons, our journey began amidst the vibrant trade routes of South Africa. Originally spice traders, our forebears, comprising six visionary brothers under the banner of "AM Rana," embarked on a mission to cater to the needs of indentured laborers who had journeyed to South Africa.

As our business burgeoned, we recognized the potential to broaden our horizons beyond spice trading. With an eye towards expansion, we ventured into the burgeoning international and local tourism industry. During the apartheid era, our path intersected with the original Indian market, a pivotal hub where Indian traders plied their wares within a designated boundary. It was here that the destiny of the "Rana" name began to take shape.

Immersing ourselves in the eclectic demands of the tourism market, we honed our expertise in sourcing artifacts indigenous to Kwa-Zulu Natal and the wider South Africa. Among our discoveries was the exquisite verdite stone, which we transformed into sculptures ranging from the monumental to the delicate. Alongside these treasures, our collection of African antiques captivated the imagination of collectors worldwide, propelling us deeper into the heart of the continent in search of authenticity.

With each successive generation, our legacy evolved. The younger members of our family embraced the allure of high-end jewelry, specializing in gold, gems, and diamonds. This diversification marked a new chapter in our story, as we established ourselves as purveyors of fine jewelry under the banner of Teshar Diamonds.

Yet, our commitment to preserving heritage remained steadfast. Through Joes Curios, founded in 1985 by A.A. Rana, we continued to showcase the talent of African artists on the global stage. By fostering relationships with international markets, we empowered these artisans to expand their reach and enrich their craft.

In our pursuit of excellence, we encountered challenges and setbacks. The transition from a centralized factory to individual artist workshops underscored our dedication to fostering black entrepreneurship and community empowerment, particularly during the tumultuous apartheid era.

Undeterred by adversity, we embraced opportunities for growth. Expanding into the hospitality sector along Kwa-Zulu Natal's famed Golden Mile, we curated collections of jewelry and artwork that captivated both tourists and locals alike. This success laid the groundwork for further expansion, culminating in the establishment of our own manufacturing and design facility, where innovation and creativity flourished.

Yet, even as our enterprises thrived, we faced our greatest trial with the onset of the global pandemic. Forced to navigate uncharted waters, we weathered the storm, determined to keep our legacy alive. As the world gradually emerged from lockdown, we pivoted our focus to the digital realm, reimagining our businesses for a new era.

Today, guided by the vision and tenacity of E.R. Amarathlal and his sons, we proudly carry forth the mantle of Rana & Rana Artwork. Committed to excellence, integrity, and innovation, we invite you to embark on a journey through our collections, where each piece tells a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and enduring beauty.
